Because of you

A burnt ridge is turning green again

Your gift of $250 on June 24 put native trees back in the ground at Bimbi Valley — and the wildlife is following them home.

4,200 seedlings went into the ridge by hand this winter

Two summers ago, fire took the whole of Bimbi Valley. The old forest — the one the gliders and the pygmy possums knew — was gone in an afternoon. What was left was ash, and a silence you could feel.

The planting crew along the fire line

This winter, your trees went in: 4,200 native seedlings along the ridge where the canopy used to stand. Spotted gum and blackwood, banksia and wattle — the exact mix the valley grew before it burned.

The rangers have already recorded nineteen species moving back through the young growth. Last month, for the first time since the fire, someone heard a powerful owl calling after dark.

Rangers walk the ridge, counting which of the 4,200 seedlings took root.
  2. Next winter
The next season of seedlings — already waiting in the nursery — goes into the ground.
  3. In five years
The canopy closes over, and the gliders come home for good.
